Home Remedies for Constipation

Constipation is considered to be the key factor for onset and progress of many body ailments, as per Ayurvedic theory which believes that if your digestion is in order, stools are passed without any hassels, wind is discharged freely or gas is eructated, your body secrets sweat regularly, you are not likely to face any health hazard. Constipation is a common symptom of those whose diet is devoid of milk products, green and leafy vegetables, roughage, sufficient amount of vitamins and minerals. Chronic suffering may lead to incarcerated flatus, pain while passing stools, pain in rectum and anus, occasional passage of blood while passing stools, foul smell, general discomfort, abdominal pain. Increase of the missing ingredient in diet, will prevent occurrence of constipation. Belching after meals is said to be a welcome sign of quick digestion of food. In addition, yogic exercises, physical exercises, walking, inhaling plenty of fresh and pure air, leading an active and busy life help to digest food, thus tuling out any possibility of constipation.

It may be noted that constipation is the probable cause behind onset of colic, flatulence, acidity, gas formation, acidity. If your bowels are regular, you are not likely to suffer from anyone of the disorder. For recent constipation take a TSP of Isabghole husk with a glass of hot milk at night, before retiring to bed. It will also improve general health condition.

Type of Constipation

Constipation is generally of three types -

  1. Either the stools are not passed even once daily or for many days

  2. One has to frequently visit the closet to pass stools but the quantity passed, each time, is quite small and there is always a feeling that 'something remained' in the intestines.

  3. When perstaltic action of intestines and rectum is sluggish and weak. In this situation either the intestine is unable to push the faecal matter to rectum or rectum itself is unable to push out or expel stools due to weak or lost peristalsis.

Useful Remedies used in the Treatment are -

  • Triphala or a combination of Harar, Bahera and Amla which should be taken at bed time with a glass of lukewarm water or hot milk. This will remove both acute and chronic constipation.

  • Take decoction of Dandalion root and liquorice sticks if this fails, take linseed(10ml) with water (250 - 300ml) at breakfast. Better coarse would be to soak the said quantity of linseed in water at night. It will absorb liquid and create a soft bulk so as to promote peristaltic wave movements. But don't forget to take plenty of water orally.

  • Add 2 drops of Rosemary, lavender or Marjoram to base oil and massage gently on the abdomen clockwise, in addition to taking anyone of the remedies.

  • Avoid taking laxatives or purgatives to ease constipation, once the habit of taking such pills build up, it becomes a habit, and stools will not be passed without intake of such pills which are habit forming.
