A bacterial infection of the bladder, also called cystitis. Cystitis, a very common condition, is usually caused by a bacteria from the anus entering the urethra and then the bladder . This leads to inflammation and infection in the lower urinary tract. A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an inflammation of the bladder due to infection with a microorganism. UTI's are second only to respiratory infections in frequency. Urine is usually sterile: that is, it contains no micro-organisms. Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the general term given to infection of the urinary system, with bacteria and pus cells being present in the urine. UTI's are more common in women because their urethras are short, making it easier for organisms to get from outside into the bladder.
