What is a Scar and its Treatment?

Scar Menu

Scar Definition:

Scar is a natural process of healing to replace the damaged skin. Because of the scars skin seems to be rough. Scars can occur because of any injury, surgery or any abnormality in skin tissue. Any part of body can get effected with scars.

Scars can be painful or itchy and can be cured using following techniques:

Dermabrasion
The technique is used to reduce the effects of acne scars and surgical scars. In this method the outer layer of skin is removed using an electric machine. After surgery the skin recovers and looks smoother.

Chemical Peels
Chemical peel method is used to reduce the effect of sun-damaged skin, superficial scars and irregular pigment. The outer layer of skin is removed using chemical agents. After this removal new skin develops which is smoother in appearance.

Collagen Injections
One type of collagen, which is derived from purified bovine (cow) collagen, is injected beneath the skin to replace body's natural collagen that has been lost. Inject-able collagen is generally used to treat wrinkles, scars, and facial lines.

Cortisone-Like Injections
These injections are helpful in the shrinking of scars.

Cryosurgery
In this method the scars are faded by freezing the outer covering of skin.

Laser Resurfacing
In this method a strong beam of laser is used to burn the damage skin. It is the best method to deal with scars.

Punch grafts
Punch graft is a method in which a portion of scar effected skin is replaced by healthy skin. In this method an incision is made in the skin for the removal of scar which is then filled with healthy skin that is generally taken from the back of earlobe. This treatment is generally used for the treatment of acne scars.

Surgical Scar Revision
In this method the whole scar is removed with the help of a surgical method. The skin is then joined in a new manner. It is not recommended by the dermatologist to every sufferer. It is kept reserved for people suffering from very long and wide scars in the visible body parts.
