Pleurisy or Pleuritis : General Treatments and Cures

Pleurisy Menu

The goals of pleurisy treatment are:

Relieve the Symptoms:

To relieve the Pleurisy symptoms the doctors recommend:

  • Ibuprofen to control the pain.
  • Cough syrups based on b to get relief from cough.
  • Lying on that side in which you are feeling the pain. It will provide you comfort.
  • Take deep breath to clear the mucus otherwise it can cause pneumonia.
  • Take plenty of rest.

Remove Fluid, Blood and Air from the Pleural Layers:

If large amount of fluid is present in the space between the plural coverings then it can cause problem for the lungs. The excess of fluid can cause pressure on the lungs that can cause collapse. The techniques used for the removal of excess of blood, air and Fluid from the membranes are:

  • Thoracentesis: In this technique the doctors used to insert a plastic tube that is thin in size in the chest wall through the ribs cage region. A syringe is used to remove the extra fluid. Fluid up to 5 cups can be removed with the help of this technique.
  • When fluid is present in large volume then a different technique is used. A chest tube is inserted in the chest wall. An injection is injected around the chest wall to sedate that area. The tube is connected to a box that sucks the fluid out. Before implementing this technique the chest X - Ray of the patient is taken to know the exact position of the patient's chest tube. The removal of the fluid can take several days, so the tube is placed there in the chest wall. The person needs to stay in the hospital till the process gets completed.
  • Sometime the pleural space gets filled with pus. It can also contain blood clots. The drainage of pus sometimes becomes difficult. To drain out the pus easily some medicines are injected through the chest tube. If the drainage of pus is still not possible then you need surgical treatment.
  • Treating the Causative Condition : The cause of the buildup of the fluid can be known by performing some lab tests on the fluid or pus, after that a treatment is given to the patient to treat the causative factor.
