Mumps - Introduction
What is Mumps?Mumps is caused by the paramyxovirus, similar to measles virus. It normally causes enlargement of the 2 salivary glands, causing pain and swelling in the cheeks. These salivary glands are found toward the back of each cheek, in the area between the ear and the jaw. In this infection there is a swelling of the parotid glands in front of each ear. The parotid are the glands responsible for making saliva. Once the mumps virus enters the body, it passes into the bloodstream and can spread to many different glands and it may even spread into the brain. The disease has been recognized for several centuries, and is common in many countries of the world including United States, so getting a vaccination against mumps is very important. Mumps is a very contagious disease and can be easily spread from person to person through saliva and can infect many parts of the body, especially the parotid salivary glands.
