Migraine - Introduction

Migraine Menu

Definition:

Migraine is a primary neurobiologic disorder, resulting from dysfunction of the trigeminovascular system. Migraine is one of the most common diseases of the nervous system. A migraine is a type of headache that usually happens in episodes or "attacks".

Migraines are also called vascular headaches, because they are believed to be caused by changes in the flow of blood in the vessels of the head. Migraines are different from other headaches because they occur with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light.

Some people who get migraines have warning symptoms, called an aura, before the actual headache begins.

There are 3 types of migraine:

  • Migraine without aura (common migraine): This type accounts for 80% of migraine headaches. There is no aura before a common migraine.
  • Migraine with aura (classic migraine): This type is usually preceded by an aura and is usually much worse than a common migraine.
  • Status migrainosus: This is the term used to describe a long-lasting migraine that does not go away by itself.
