Emphysema : Major Treatment and its Cures

Emphysema Menu

There is no treatment available for Emphysema but you can reduce the complications. Following are some tips that serve as cure for this disorder:

  • Avoid Smoking: Smoking is the main cause of Emphysema. So never indulge in smoking habits or always protect yourself from second hand smoke.
  • Exercises: Exercises are helpful in increasing the efficiency of the lungs. It should be kept in mind to adopt proper breathing techniques while performing exercises.
  • Steroids: Steroids such as corticosteroids are helpful in getting relief from this disorder as these are helpful in reducing the irritation and inflammation of the lungs. Theses steroids can be taken in the form of pills and capsules or can be directly injected in the body. Corticosteroids in the form of inhalers are generally recommended if the symptoms of the disorder are more severe.
  • Antibiotics: Antibiotics are helpful in reducing the episodes of shortness of breath.
  • Oxygen Therapy: Oxygen therapy is helpful for those people who are having oxygen supply below than normal in their lungs. Oxygen is supplied to the lungs with the help of a plastic tube that is worn under the nostrils. The oxygen required for supply is stored in the cylinders. The oxygen can be taken from the purifier also but its purification is necessary as the atmosphere contains a lot of pollutants. Oxygen concentrator is an electronic machine that is used for the purification of the oxygen.
  • Volume Reduction Surgery: Volume reduction surgery is helpful for the patients suffering from advanced emphysema. In this surgery a few parts of the lungs are removed to reduce the volume and improve the structure of the lungs. Lung transplantation is the best cure available for the patients suffering from severe Emphysema. It is possible to transplant a single or both the lungs. But the transplantation treatment is expensive and very risky also. Sometime it is difficult to find a donor. If complete respiratory failure occurs in this disorder then the patient need to be hospitalized where he can be kept alive with the help of advance inhalation therapy.
  • Diet: Diet plays an important role in the prevention of Emphysema. You need to avoid food stuffs that tend to develop mucus. These include fried foods and food stuffs that are rich in fat.
