What is Emphysema and What are its Symptoms and Causes?
Introduction:
Emphysema is a disorder of the lungs that progresses gradually. In this disorder the shortness of the breath occurs. In this disorder the tissues that are necessary for maintaining the shape of the lungs and functionality are destroyed. Emphysema is also referred as an obstructive lung disease because in this disorder the lung tissues near the bronchioles get destructed. The destruction of the lung tissues can occur.
Symptoms Of Emphysema:
The major symptom observed of Emphysema is:
Shortness of Breath: This is the main symptom of Emphysema disease. People suffering from emphysema show signs of shortness of breath generally on exertion. For example running, jogging, walking. The other symptom related to the breathing symptom is the reduced breath sound.
Causes Of Emphysema
Emphysema is caused because of the following reasons:
- Cigarette Smoking: Cigarette smoking is the main cause of Emphysema. Smoking generally damages the tissues of the lungs and also causes the irritation and blockage of the airways.
- Air Pollution: The air pollutants cause this disorder in the same away as the cigarette smoking does. It causes the inflammation of the air ways and thus affects the working of the lungs.
- Genes: The disease can be inherited in the family. Therefore the close relatives of the sufferer are most likely to suffer from the disease. However the role of the genes in the spreading of this disorder is not clear.
- Asthma: Asthma is also responsible for the occurrence of this disorder as the lungs are affected very badly in Asthma.
- Gender: The men are more likely to develop this disorder than women because of the differences in the body hormones.
- Age: Growing age is also an important factor that causes Emphysema because the functionality and the efficiency of the lungs decrease with time because of the destruction of the lung tissues. Because of reason the old age people are more likely to develop this disorder.
- Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency: Alpha-1-antitrypsin is an enzyme which protects the human body from the attack of another enzyme known as trypsin. It is a digestive enzyme that is mainly found in the digestive track of the human body. It helps in the proper consumption of the food. But this enzyme also has some adverse effects on the body. The main function of the Alpha-1-antitrypsin is to mitigate the negative effects caused by trypsin. The people having deficiency of this enzyme in their body are unable to fight against the bad effects of the trypsin on the lungs due to which the destruction of the lung tissues takes place and the performance of the lungs decreases.
