Causes for Dandruff

The main cause of the dandruff is the excessive production of oil by the sebaceous glands which in turn is acted upon by microorganisms. The cause of dandruff is usually a fungus called Pityrosporum ovale (P. ovale), it is a naturally occurring yeast-like organism.

Some of the other main Causes of dandruff are:

• Dandruff is a Seasonal Disease - This disease is in it's most severe form during the winter days and mildest during the summer days.
• Dandruff scales usually occur as small, round, white-to-gray patches on the top of the head; however, scaling can occur anywhere on the scalp.
• Excessive use of hair sprays and gels may also lead to the formation of dandruff.
• Improper use of hair-coloring products or excessive use of electric hair curlers is also one of the main cause of dandruff.
• Tight fitting hats and scarves.
• Infrequent shampooing of the hair or inadequate rinsing can even lead to dandruff.
• Stress, anxiety and tension is another cause of dandruff.
• Hypersensitivity, or an overreaction of the immune system to an antigen, also probably contributes to dandruff.
• Genetics: Dandruff tends to run in families.
• Contact Dermatitis - Sometimes sensitivities to certain hair-care products or hair dyes can cause a red, itchy, scaling scalp or in one word, dandruff.
