Cystitis - Introduction - What is Cystitis?
Definition:Cystitis is the inflammation of the bladder, whose main cause is a bacterium named E. coli, and is usually characterized by a desire to pass urine frequently, and pain or a burning sensation while passing urine. Cystitis is often accompanied by urethritis. Urethritis is inflammation of the urethra. The urethra is the tube through which the bladder empties the waste material of body. Cystitis and urethritis together are sometimes called lower urinary tract infections. Cystitis can affect any person (i.e. of any age or sex), but is more common in women. It is a very common disease in menopausal women. In these type of women, the bacteria is transmitted from a vagina left more susceptible to bacterial overgrowth by changes in estrogen levels.
