This is a disease of the heart and the coronary arteries that is usually characterized by atherosclerotic arterial deposits that block blood flow to the heart, causing myocardial infarction. The coronary arteries arise from the aorta adjacent to the heart and supply the heart muscle with blood that is rich in oxygen.
