Colitis - Introduction - What is Colitis?

Alternative Name - Ulcerative Colitis, Colonitis

Definition:

Colitis is a digestive disorder in which there is a chronic inflammation of the colon (large intestine). There are several different types and causes of colitis, including: pseudomembranous colitis, irritable bowel syndrome and many more.

In ulcerative colitis, the entire colon is involved. When the entire colon is involved, the terms pancolitis or universal colitis are used. Ulcerative colitis is caused from internalized anger. It is a form of inflammatory bowel disease and are similar to the, Crohn's disease.

In such patients i.e with ulcerative colitis or ulcers or inflammation of the inner lining of the colon lead to symptoms of abdominal pain, diarrhea , and rectal bleeding.

When the inflammation is limited to the rectum, it is called ulcerative proctitis. Ulcerative colitis can also be associated with inflammation in joints, spine, skin, eyes, the liver and its bile ducts. Treatment of ulcerative colitis can involve medications and surgery.
