The symptoms of colitis usually vary according to the extent of the disease. Some of patients only suffer from the disease only in the rectum, which means that the symptoms are fairly mild, while in some of the person the disease may also affects the lower part of the large intestine. Though, in the remaining patients, ulcerative colitis affects all of the large intestine.

Ulcerative Colitis causes inflammation and sores (i.e. ulcers) in the inner lining of the large intestine. Ulcers generally form at places where the inflammation has killed the cells linings of the colon. The ulcers developed may even bleed and produce pus. The inflammation makes the colon empty frequently, causing diarrhea. So it is recommended for the colitis suffering patients to drink lots and lots of water.

Some of the Other Common Symptoms of Colitis are:

Pain on opening the bowels.
Urgent and frequent need to open the bowels
Sensation of incomplete emptying of the bowels
Diarrhea (which may even be accompanied with blood), even during the night
Nausea.
Loss of Appetite.
Extreme Tiredness
Fatigue.
Mucus or Blood in stool.
Mild stomach pains
Sometimes fever may also develop.

Anemia.
Weight Loss.
Skin Lesions.
Joint Pains.
