Causes for Colitis
Alternative Name - Ulcerative Colitis, Colonitis
Till Now, the exact cause of ulcerative colitis is not known to anyone, but heredity and an overactive immune response in the intestine may cause colitis to occur. Cigarette smoking is another main cause of Colitis. Colitis is not a contagious disease.
Some of the Possible Causes for Colitis are:
- Immune System or a Virus and Bacterium - Some of the scientists say that it is another inflammatory bowel disease which may have resulted from an abnormal response by the body's immune system to normal intestinal bacteria.
- Heredity - Colitis can be easily passed to the offspring's from their parents (if they are suffering from this disease).
- Antibiotics - Antibiotics are the another cause of colitis. Any antibiotic therapy can lead to acute colitis or to pseudomembranous colitis, which is particularly a more serious disease. These problems occur because antibiotics disrupt the normal balance of bacteria in your intestinal tract. But, this has not been proved fully, and researches are still going on.
- Intake of certain foods and drugs may also lead to the formation of colitis.
- Crohn's disease is one of the main cause of formation of colitis.
