Causes of Cirrhosis
Cirrhosis has many causes. It can result from direct injury to the liver cells or from indirect injury via inflammation to bile ducts which drain the liver cells of bile. In cirrhosis, the relationship between blood and liver cells is destroyed. Even though the liver cells that survive or are newly formed may be able to produce and remove substances from the blood. One of the main cause of cirrhosis is long term drinking of alcohol. In the liver, alcohol converts to toxic chemicals, such as acetaldehyde, which trigger the production of powerful immune factors called cytokines. Another common cause of cirrhosis is chronic hepatitis, it may be either Hepatitis - B or C. Chronic Hepatitis C is the more dangerous form than Chronic Hepatitis B and accounts for one-third of all cirrhosis cases. Some other Important Causes of Cirrhosis are:
